Scalp Micropigmentation
Consultations offered at our two convenient locations in Florham Park, NJ and Somerville, NJ

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) at The Peer Group for Plastic Surgery is an advanced treatment option for individuals looking to address hair loss and improve hair density. This procedure, also known as a hair tattoo, involves the placement of tiny, precise dots of pigment into the scalp’s epidermal layer, creating the illusion of natural hair follicles. This can result in a fuller-looking head of hair or a more defined hairline, catering to both men and women.
Our SMP specialist, Kristi Breen, is highly trained and skilled in delivering natural and attractive results that complement your existing hair. The use of a specialized pigment ensures that the treatment blends seamlessly with your natural hair and skin tone, providing a realistic appearance.
Scalp micropigmentation can be a life-changing solution for individuals struggling with hair loss, offering a confidence boost and a sense of restored self-esteem. Whether you prefer a closely cropped look or a longer hairstyle, SMP can help create the appearance of fuller, denser hair.
SMP offers a versatile solution for a variety of hair loss concerns, providing benefits such as:
- A lower hairline customized to look natural.
- The appearance of hair density for a fuller look.
- Scar camouflage for previous scalp injuries, surgeries, or hair transplants.
SMP is also an excellent complement to hair transplants as it can fill in any gaps and create a more uniform appearance.

What To Expect During Your SMP Session

Scalp micropigmentation sessions generally last 3 to 4 hours dependent on the size of the area being treated, with most patients needing 3 to 4 sessions, spaced about 3 weeks apart, to achieve their desired results. Using a specialized microneedle, microdots of pigment are applied to replicate the appearance of hair follicles. While some patients may experience minor discomfort, the treatment is usually well tolerated without the need for numbing medication. This non-invasive procedure can effectively create the look of a fuller head of hair for those experiencing thinning or balding.
What Is Recovery Like After SMP?
There is minimal downtime following a scalp micropigmentation treatment. You may experience slight redness and mild swelling for the first day or two, but these effects usually resolve quickly. You can return to work and most of your daily activities immediately, with a few simple aftercare guidelines to follow for optimal results.
For the first several days, you must avoid getting the scalp wet, including through activities that may induce heavy sweating, such as hot tubs, steam rooms, and strenuous exercise. You’ll also need to take precautions to avoid sun exposure for a minimum of 4 days post procedure. We advise you on when you can wash your scalp and how to care for your skin as it heals.
Your SMP Results
Scalp micropigmentation results are immediate, with the pigment initially appearing darker before softening to its intended shade over a few weeks. These results are semi-permanent, typically lasting 6 to 8 years before a touch-up session is needed. Over time, the pigment may fade slightly, but proper aftercare, including protecting the scalp from sun exposure, can help extend the longevity of the results. This process allows for a natural blend with the skin and hair, providing a realistic and long-lasting solution for hair tattooing.
