If you are unhappy with the size and projection of your breasts, breast augmentation surgery could prove to be a huge self-confidence booster. Hailed as one of the most popular procedures at The Peer Group in Florham Park, NJ, breast augmentation is a fantastic solution for women with naturally small breasts or breasts that have been affected by pregnancy. This cosmetic procedure can help women display a more proportionate body while restoring their post-pregnancy figure.

The board-certified plastic surgeons at The Peer Group in the Greater New Jersey area are renowned for their surgical skill in performing breast augmentations. During your consultation, our plastic surgeons will take the time to ensure you understand the augmentation process. Read below to learn more about breast augmentation surgery, including the different techniques available.

Breast augmentation and breast lift

Breast augmentations are performed to enhance the shape and size of a woman’s breasts. This is typically achieved with the use of silicone or saline implants, though there are other options available. There are many reasons New Jersey-area women opt for augmentation, including a decrease in breast volume due to pregnancy or weight loss. Augmentation can also solve problems with breast asymmetry. Ideal candidates for this surgery are at a healthy and stable weight, are not pregnant or breastfeeding, and have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure.

A breast lift can be performed simultaneously with breast augmentation. This procedure works by removing excess skin and lifting the breasts to improve their position on your chest. Patients with sagging breasts or nipples that point downward will be able to achieve more firmness through a breast lift. The circumference of the areolas can also be reduced, so they are more proportionate to the newly shaped breasts. During your consultation at The Peer Group, they will listen to your goals for plastic surgery and explain if breast augmentation, a breast lift, or a combination procedure is right for you.

Your breast implant options

Saline implants and silicone implants

Implants for breast augmentation come in a range of sizes and profiles. Today, the most commonly used implants are saline or silicone gel. Both implant types are safe to use and are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

  • Saline implants: For breast augmentation using saline implants, our plastic surgeon will insert a silicone shell into the breast, then fill the shell with sterile saline fluid. With the ability to make minor adjustments, saline implants make it easier to tailor your results according to your expectations.
  • Silicone implants: Silicone is more viscous than saline, often creating a more natural look and feel to the breast. Since the silicone gel used in the implants is thicker than saline, it is also less likely to appear rippled under the skin.

Women considering saline implants must be at least 18 years old, while silicone implants require a minimum age of 22 to receive treatment.

IDEAL IMPLANT®

Like the name states, this type of breast implant is considered "ideal" because it offers the positive elements of both saline and silicone implants. A revolutionary option, IDEAL IMPLANTS are round, smooth-surfaced, and saline-filled. An IDEAL IMPLANT is referred to as a Structured Breast Implant because it is composed of a complex multishell structure that holds two compartments filled with saline. It is designed to allow for the saline inside to move around with a natural feel, while keeping it compartmentalized so it still has structure. The saline compartments are filled once the implants are positioned inside the breast.

Breast augmentation with fat transfer

Breast augmentation with fat transfer is a surgical procedure that can contour the breasts into the desired shape and size through the use of your body's own fat. This innovative surgical technique has become more widespread in recent years, thanks in part to medical advancements in surgical technology. This more-natural alternative to breast implants incorporates the body's fat cells instead of saline or silicone implants for the desired aesthetic effect.

As an added benefit, this customized technique also reduces the size of other parts of the body. Fat is removed via liposuction from target areas such as the abdomen, love handles, thighs, or buttocks, then purified and transferred to the breasts to complete the augmentation. Because a fat transfer is an autologous method, there are fewer risks associated with this procedure than with silicone or saline breast implants.

Breast implant concerns

Breast implant concerns such as ruptures can occur for many reasons after breast augmentation surgery. The most common reason for a structural compromise happens when the outer shell weakens with age. Over- or underfilling breast implants or physical trauma are other contributing factors. When saline breast implants rupture, the implant deflates as the body safely absorbs the saline solution. If a silicone implant ruptures, the gel material does not leak, and it is difficult to tell that a rupture has occurred. The Peer Group advises its Greater New Jersey-area patients to get an MRI every few years to make sure the implant is still in tip-top shape. If you have any reason to believe your breast implant is ruptured, schedule an appointment with The Peer Group right away.
