Liposuction
Consultations offered at our two convenient locations in Florham Park, NJ and Somerville, NJ
Liposuction is a minimally invasive body contouring procedure that removes unwanted fat to help you achieve a smoother, more contoured appearance. Unwanted fat can affect the balance of your body proportions, making some areas appear fuller than others. As you age, your metabolism changes and stubborn “diet-resistant fat” can affect your figure whether you recently experienced weight changes or have been naturally slim your entire life.

About Liposuction
Liposuction is one of the most effective treatments for eliminating stubborn fat cells that are resistant to diet and exercise. In 2023, surgeons performed more than 347,700 liposuction procedures to help patients rebalance their proportions and eliminate excess fat. (1) Although liposuction is not a weight-loss method, it is ideal for strategically shaping parts of the body where fat is especially stubborn. Fat does not “float” freely in the belly area or elsewhere, but is contained inside cells that grow and shrink depending on how many calories you consume and burn. Genetics typically determine which areas of your body slim down first—or at all. Although a healthy diet and consistent exercise can help you decrease the size of your fat cells, it does not necessarily decrease the number of fat cells. (2) This type of stubborn fat can make it harder to meet your aesthetic goals with lifestyle changes alone. With liposuction, we can remove them to create a slimmer, more athletic silhouette.
Liposuction Benefits
After liposuction, you can enjoy several benefits, including:
- Permanent fat removal: With liposuction, we can permanently remove the excess fat cells for a slimmer figure.
- Balanced body proportions: Liposuction enhances your body contours, creating a more defined silhouette that can improve your confidence and self-esteem.
- Minimal scarring: We make small, strategic incisions along the natural folds of your skin.
- A customizable treatment: We can perform liposuction on the abdomen, thighs, arms, or neck depending on your aesthetic goals.
- Enhanced quality of life: By reducing excess fat, you can enjoy balanced proportions and feel more comfortable in your body.
- Highlighted muscle definition: For those who maintain a healthy lifestyle, liposuction can enhance muscle definition, particularly for athletes or fitness enthusiasts.
- Fast recovery time: Many liposuction patients experience a relatively quick recovery, particularly with newer, minimally invasive techniques.
Candidates & Consultation
During your consultation, we will discuss your body goals and outline a treatment plan to suit your needs. Patients considering liposuction should understand that the procedure is not a weight loss method. Suitable candidates should be in good health and be within 30% of a healthy body mass index. (2) A Peer Group plastic surgeon can assess you with a physical exam to determine whether liposuction would work well for you since there are also non-surgical fat-reduction options available. These options provide results that are more gradual and not as dramatic as what is possible via surgery. Visit our before-and-after photo gallery to see patients who were able to achieve a slimmer figure with liposuction.
Liposuction Procedure
During the procedure, we will inject tumescent fluid into the treatment area– a solution that contains lidocaine, epinephrine, and saline that causes the fat cells to swell for easier removal. (3) Every liposuction procedure begins with anesthesia to make the procedure more comfortable. We offer liposuction under local anesthesia, where patients do not have to be “put under” to receive their procedure. Next, your surgeon will use a tool called a cannula to dislodge your fat and remove it with suction. Our surgeons make every effort to keep these incisions as small and inconspicuous as possible. We insert the cannula through a small incision at a precise depth to strategically remove your excess fat cells. The cannula frees the stubborn fat cells while preserving the surrounding tissues. While all liposuction procedures involve removing unwanted fat, the surgery specifics will depend on where this fat is located, and the size of the treatment area. In any case, the first step will be making incisions in the target area.
Recovery from Liposuction
Recovery after liposuction depends on how extensive the procedure itself is. In general, the greater the amount of fat removed, the longer the recovery period. Liposuction patients can expect a few weeks of swelling, bruising, and some discomfort in the treatment area. The Peer Group team recommends planning to be able to take time off from work and use this time to rest and heal. After a few days of downtime following the surgery, patients are encouraged to move around to get their blood flowing. Occasional light walks are a good choice, but you should avoid intense exertion or heavy lifting for at least six weeks to help your body heal.
Liposuction Results
The initial swelling after surgery can hide the true liposuction results for a short while, but once this side effect resolves, the new contours will be visible. These results can last for years, depending on how well you take care of your body. We encourage all of our patients to maintain healthy lifestyle habits to make their results last for as long as possible. This means eating healthy foods, sleeping 7-8 hours, and getting regular exercise.
Additional Body Contouring Treatments
Although liposuction can get rid of excess fat in targeted areas, it is not a solution for loose skin. We offer several treatments to help you remove redundant, sagging skin:
- Arm lift: We can remove droopy skin that swings uncomfortably from the arms for a smoother look.
- Breast lift: We can eliminate droopy skin from the breasts and lift their position to help make you more comfortable.
- Thigh lift: If you have droopy skin on the thighs, we can remove it with discrete incisions that can help you achieve more slender legs.
- Tummy tuck: If you have loose abdominal skin, we can help you achieve a smoother abdomen with a tummy tuck.
- Mommy makeover: We can perform several body contouring treatments such as a tummy tuck and breast lift during one appointment.
If you recently lost weight, we can remove excess, droopy skin with post-weight loss body surgery– a customizable collection of procedures designed to sculpt your figure. To learn more, see our blog.
