Procedure

Every hair that grows emerges from a follicle, which holds the hair’s root. Shaving cuts the hair off at the surface of the skin while waxing and plucking rip the hair out from the follicle. In any of these cases, the follicle continues to function by either helping a hair to grow longer or a new hair to grow.

Laser hair reduction takes a different approach. Sending a focused, single wavelength of light into the skin can damage the follicles by heating pigmented cells, disrupting the normal hair-growing cycle. Hairs in the treatment area will soon fall out, resulting in smooth skin.

Procedure Details

After a consultation to go over which area or areas will be targeted for laser hair reduction, one of our physicians will perform the treatment, starting with applying a topical cooling gel to make the experience more comfortable. The laser light emitted by the device passes through the surface to generate heat in the pigmented cells of the follicle, causing a “snapping” sensation as it goes. The treatment can also cause a warm sensation to develop. Patients tend to tolerate this just fine and are given protective eyewear for laser hair reduction treatments on the face.

Laser hair reduction sessions can last anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes, depending on which and how many areas are being treated.

Recovery & Results

Skin treated in a laser hair reduction session will be red and sensitive after the treatment, similar to the effects of a sunburn. Irritation and related side effects should fade in the following hours, and patients are free to return to work or social activities as they feel comfortable. Be sure to wear sunscreen and otherwise protect the treated skin against ultraviolet radiation damage.

There will be no visible change right away, but hairs will begin to fall out of the damaged follicles after a few days have passed. It is important to understand that laser hair reduction works only on follicles that are active at the time of the treatment, so not every hair will be impacted. Multiple treatment sessions are typically required to achieve “complete” hair reduction in a given area.
