Laser Vein Treatment

Most of our veins are hidden below the surface, where they can’t be seen. Sometimes, however, a combination of factors—including thin skin and poor blood flow—causes some vessels to become visible beneath the skin. Whether the problem is thin spider veins or thicker varicose veins, a laser vein treatment from New Jersey’s The Peer Group can help.

Our board-certified physicians administer each laser vein treatment at the practice, using their medical education and experience to target unneeded veins with precision and care. Unlike some strategies that involve injections or inserting devices into the veins to collapse them, this nonsurgical treatment involves nothing more than light energy. There are no incisions or injections.

Procedure

Sun exposure, skin that thins with age, a sedentary lifestyle, circulation problems, and chronic health conditions can cause certain veins to become visible. Thin, red, web-like lines on the face are known as spider veins, while ropier veins that form on the legs are referred to as varicose veins.

A laser vein treatment addresses these unwanted visible vessels by targeting hemoglobin, which are pigmented cells in the blood. These red- to purple-colored cells absorb light emitted from the laser vein treatment device, causing them to rapidly heat up. This heat collapses and seals off the vessel so that blood can no longer flow through it. In time, the damaged and isolated vessels are broken down and absorbed by the body.

Because there are thousands of deeper veins to carry blood as needed, this treatment doesn’t negatively impact the circulatory system.

The Peer Group uses the Nd:Yag laser for laser vein treatments, employing the same device we use to safely reduce hair follicles.

Treatment Details

The laser vein treatment process begins with a consultation so that one of The Peer Group’s physicians can examine the vessels in question and create an appropriate treatment plan. While spider veins are a cosmetic issue, varicose veins can be uncomfortable or even painful and may indicate underlying health problems, so a diagnosis is important.

The warmth generated by the laser light is generally well-tolerated, but certain parts of the body may be more sensitive than others. A session may last 15 to 30 minutes but may take longer depending on how many areas are being treated.

Recovery & Results

Laser energy typically causes the skin to turn red and be especially sensitive for a day or two after a laser vein treatment. These sunburn-like sensations will fade on their own, and no special care or downtime is needed—aside from ensuring the treated area is protected from any intense sun exposure.

The natural processes that break down the veins so they are no longer visible take weeks, so expect gradual results. Typically, it just takes a single session to provide optimal results, but some patients have widespread vein concerns that require multiple visits.

Available Options

Laser hair reductionlaser skin resurfacing, and laser scar revision all make use of single-wavelength light devices to improve the look of the skin. Another versatile option, IPL (intense pulsed light), can be broadly applied to address several cosmetic concerns. The right treatment for you will depend on your aesthetic goals.
