What Is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation remains one of the most popular plastic surgery options in the United States in 2023. Why do people get breast implants? Here are some basic facts about the procedure to help you understand what it can do and why it is such a common surgery.
Breast augmentation is sometimes referred to as a “boob job.” Also called augmentation mammoplasty, breast enhancement, or breast enlargement, breast augmentation is a procedure performed to change the size and shape of the breasts by adding volume. Boosting their size can create anything from a modest to dramatic change, as well as improved projection, cleavage, and more.
No matter what you call it, the idea is simple: Breast implants or a patient’s own fat will be used to add volume to enhance the size and improve the shape of the breasts. The ultimate goal of this surgery for most people is to improve their natural proportions, enhance symmetry, and create an aesthetically pleasing breast profile.
Breast augmentation has remained one of the most in-demand cosmetic procedures likely due to its reliability and the number of options patients have when it comes to personalizing their results.
Procedure
Each patient’s unique breast augmentation surgery details will depend on the cosmetic goals and treatment plan developed during their personal consultation. The exact type of breast surgery performed will be customized to fit a patient’s individual needs.
In general, every breast augmentation surgery starts in our private on-site AAAASF-certified operating room with a specialist administering anesthesia to keep you safe and comfortable throughout the procedure.
For surgery involving breast implants, a single cut, called an incision, is made. Next, the chosen implants are securely inserted into a carefully made pocket, and the incisions are closed. With the fat transfer technique, fat is removed from an area of the body such as the abdomen, hips, or thighs. The fat is then purified and injected into the breasts to produce the desired results.
Ideal Candidates
How do you know if you need breast augmentation? Who is a good candidate for breast implants?
There are some basic qualities that would make breast augmentation a good choice for you. If you are healthy and want to increase your bust size, breast augmentation may be ideal. You will need to be in a good state of physical health, not pregnant or breastfeeding, have breasts that are fully developed, and have the procedure because you want it for yourself, rather than to please another person. If you are unhappy because your breasts are asymmetrical or lacking in cleavage and volume, it’s likely that you would be a good candidate for breast augmentation. It’s also important for patients who are having breast augmentation to maintain a positive outlook and realistic expectations.
On the other hand, who should not get breast augmentation? If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning to become pregnant, want to correct breast sagging, or are under the age of 18, then another option would likely be better for you.
Patients should understand that adding volume does not address sagging—and can, in fact, contribute to the problem by making breasts heavier and more likely to pull downward. A breast lift is more appropriate for correcting drooping breasts.
Breast augmentation and lifts can also be combined, with our plastic surgeons using techniques specially developed to boost volume while keeping the breasts in an elevated position on the chest.
Options
Breast augmentation is a highly customizable procedure. There are a series of choices that patients will have to make with the help of their plastic surgeon.
Breast Implants
Most breast augmentation procedures are performed with breast implants, which are silicone shells filled with material made to mimic fat and breast tissue. Breast implants come in different sizes and may be filled with saline or silicone, giving patients plenty of flexibility in the type of results they are able to achieve. Each type of implant has its own unique benefits, which you will discuss with your plastic surgeon during your consultation.
Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation
At The Peer Group in New Jersey, we also offer fat transfer breast augmentation, which uses excess fat cells taken from other areas of the body to enhance the breasts. Fat is an ideal material to use for breast augmentation since it is made naturally by your body. However, it is important to understand that only modest volume increases are possible when using nothing more than your own fat. More commonly, fat can be used to refine the results of breast augmentation with implants. Our plastic surgeons often use fat cells to “soften” the edges of the implants and provide patients with especially natural-looking results.
Considerations
If you choose breast implants for augmentation, you will also need to make some decisions about the implants themselves.
Breast Implant Size
The size of the implants is one of the most important characteristics a patient will need to decide on for breast augmentation. We will help you choose the size of implant that best fits your body proportions and allows you to achieve your ultimate desired look.
Breast Implant Types
An implant is a device placed inside of a pocket in the breast to augment or reconstruct chest contours via breast augmentation. There are two main types of implants: saline and silicone. Saline implants contain a sterile saltwater solution, while silicone implants contain a silicone gel. Another option to consider is a more cohesive, form-stable silicone implant that has the consistency of a gummy bear.
Newer implants available as of 2021, Ideal implants, are filled with saline separated into compartments and made with advanced techniques that give them a very natural look while maintaining the lowest rupture rate of any implant available.
Breast Implant Incisions
Your plastic surgeon will also discuss incision options for breast augmentation with you. For breast augmentation with implants, your surgeon will make an incision along the inframammary fold, where the lower part of the breast meets the chest wall. Alternatively, an incision may be made around a portion of the areola. In either case, making the incision in these areas follows natural lines that camouflage visible scarring.
Breast Implant Placement
Implants are placed in pockets behind the breasts themselves. There are two types of implant placements for breast augmentation: submuscular placement and submammary or subglandular placement. In a submuscular placement, the implants are positioned behind the pectoral muscles, while in a subglandular placement, they are placed in front of the pectoral muscles but behind the breast tissue.
Optimal Breast Augmentation Method
We understand that plastic surgery is a big decision. That’s why we’re with you every step of the way, helping you to understand what breast augmentation can and can’t do, what to expect right after the procedure, 10 years down the line, and beyond.
To help you get a better sense of how specific implants and techniques could impact your figure, we offer Vectra 3D imaging. This advanced technology takes detailed scans of a patient, creating a realistic virtual model that can be digitally enhanced to reveal how various sizes and shapes of implants would make their breasts look. The simulated results are not “promises”—because individual healing abilities and other unique factors and circumstances influence the ultimate results—but they are accurate and can give a reliable “preview” to anyone wondering how breast augmentation would change their appearance.

Post Procedure & Recovery
In general, you can expect to experience some common post-surgical side effects for one to two weeks after your procedure: swelling, bruising, and discomfort. With this in mind, you can plan to take time away from work and other activities in order to rest and heal following your surgery. We also recommend that patients avoid any exercise or heavy lifting for at least six weeks after their procedure.
Expectations & Results
How long does it take for breast implants to “settle in?” Your breasts will be visibly larger right after your surgery, but keep in mind that initial swelling will make them look different from how they will ultimately appear long-term.
How long is breast augmentation good for? Implants do not stop time, gravity, and the realities of aging from happening, but both implants and fat transfer techniques provide results that last for many years. There is no set “time limit” on how long results will appear ideal to a particular patient, and many people are quite happy with their enhanced bust for decades.
A healthy lifestyle, routine check-ups, and other maintenance strategies can help to ensure you enjoy your breast augmentation results far into the future. If sagging becomes a problem, your personal preferences change, you want to “update” your look again, or anything else happens to make you consider a new surgery for your appearance, we can work with you then, too.
Costs
The exact cost of any procedure will vary depending on your individual cosmetic goals and the specific approach we take to enhance your breasts. Once we develop a customized treatment plan after our thorough consultation, we will be able to inform you of the breast augmentation cost. You can learn more about the cost of your procedure, as well as your payment options, by visiting our financing page.
Breast Surgery Options
There are several other breast surgery options you can choose from at The Peer Group in addition to breast augmentation. Each patient can decide which form of breast surgery is best suited to them based on their individual needs.
A breast lift will restore a perkier, lifted appearance to breasts that have become saggy or drooping because of the effects of aging, gravity, weight fluctuations, or pregnancy. While some patients want larger breasts, others want to reduce them. Breast reduction decreases the size of the breasts for patients who have heavy breasts that are causing discomfort or lowering the quality of life. Any type of breast surgery can be included in a Mommy Makeover, which is a combination of surgeries and treatments focused on restoring their pre-pregnancy body shape. Male breast reduction helps men with gynecomastia to get a more traditionally masculine chest.
Patients who need to undergo a partial or complete mastectomy for breast cancer-related surgery can restore their figure with breast reconstruction. Additionally, women who want to alter the appearance of the breasts, have their implants removed for good, or have their implants replaced after a previous breast augmentation, we perform breast implant removal.
