About Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation, sometimes referred to as a “boob job,” improves the size and shape of the breasts by adding volume with implants or a patient’s own fat. Most breast augmentation procedures are performed with breast implants, which are either saline or silicone-filled implants that mimic the feeling and movement of natural breast tissue. Breast augmentation is a highly customizable procedure.
Depending on your aesthetic goals, we can place different types of implants to improve breast projection and cleavage. In 2023, specialists performed more than 304,000 breast augmentation procedures to help patients enhance their figures. (1)
Breast Implants
Breast implants come in different sizes for patients with different aesthetic goals. We will place the implant inside the breast pocket to increase the volume of your breasts. Each type of implant has its own unique benefits, which you can discuss with your plastic surgeon during your consultation. There are a few main types of implants:
- Saline: Saline implants contain a sterile saltwater solution that provides a natural look while maintaining the lowest rupture rate of any implant available.
- Silicone: Silicone implants contain a soft silicone gel and are ideal for patients with a low body mass index (BMI).
- Gummy Bear: Another more stable form of silicone gel can improve the projection of your breasts and provide a firmer feel.
The size of the implants is one of the most important characteristics a patient will need to decide on. We will help you choose the size of implant that best fits your body proportions for a balanced appearance.
Breast Implant Incisions
There are several different types of incisions we can perform for your desired look. The doctors at The Peer Group have been trained to make discreet, natural-looking incisions along the natural folds of your skin. For breast augmentation with implants, your surgeon will make an incision around a portion of the areola or along the inframammary fold, where the lower part of the breast meets the chest wall. During a consultation, your surgeon will also discuss incision options for breast augmentation with you. In either case, making the incision in these areas follows natural lines that reduce visible scarring.
Breast Implant Placement
Implants are placed in pockets behind the breasts themselves. There are two types of implant placements for breast augmentation: submuscular placement and subglandular placement. In a submuscular placement, the implants are positioned behind the pectoral muscles, while in a subglandular placement, they are placed in front of the pectoral muscles but behind the breast tissue. The type of placement you need will depend on your aesthetic goals and underlying anatomy. Each procedure is customized for your desired look.
Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation
At The Peer Group, we also offer fat transfer breast augmentation which uses excess fat cells taken from other areas of the body to enhance the breasts. Fat is an ideal material to use for breast augmentation since it is made naturally by your body. However, it is important to understand that only modest volume increases are possible when using nothing more than your own fat. More commonly, fat can be used to refine the results of breast augmentation with implants. Our plastic surgeons often use fat cells to “soften” the edges of the implants and provide patients with especially natural-looking results.
Benefits
There are several benefits to breast augmentation, including:
- More symmetrical breasts: The procedure can balance asymmetries affecting your proportions (2)
- Increased self-confidence: Many patients feel better about their appearance after increasing the volume of their breasts.
- Balanced body proportions: Increasing the volume of your breasts can help you enjoy a curvier appearance.
- Long-lasting results: If you take good care of your body, you can enjoy results that last for 10-15 years.
- Customizable procedure: We can select an implant based on your unique body type.
- Better-fitting clothing: After the procedure, you can enjoy better-fitting bras and feel more comfortable in different types of clothing.
Candidates
Some basic qualities would make breast augmentation a good choice for you. If you are healthy and want to increase your breast size, breast augmentation may be ideal. You will need to be in good physical health, not pregnant or breastfeeding, have breasts that are fully developed, and lastly, have realistic expectations.
If you are unhappy because your breasts are asymmetrical or lacking in cleavage and volume, you are likely a good candidate for breast augmentation. It is also important for patients who are having breast augmentation to maintain a positive outlook and realistic expectations.
Personal Consultation
During your consultation, we will ask about your medical history and lifestyle to determine the best type of procedure for your needs. To help you get a better sense of how specific implants and techniques could impact your figure, we offer Vectra 3D imaging. This advanced technology takes detailed scans of a patient, creating a realistic virtual model to reveal how various sizes and shapes of implants would make their breasts look.
Breast Augmentation Lift
Patients should understand that adding volume does not address sagging—and can, in fact, contribute to the problem by making breasts heavier and more likely to pull downward. A breast lift can restore a perkier, lifted appearance to breasts that have become saggy or drooping because of the effects of aging, gravity, weight fluctuations, or pregnancy. We can perform breast augmentation and lifts at the same time with techniques specially developed to improve volume while keeping the breasts in an elevated position on the chest.
Preparation
Before your procedure, you will need to take several steps to prepare:
- Stop smoking temporarily
- Discontinue medications and supplements that thin your blood
- Avoid sun exposure
- Arrange for someone you trust to drive you home
- Schedule time off work to heal
Procedure
Each patient’s unique breast augmentation surgery details will depend on the cosmetic goals and treatment plan developed during their consultation.
Breast Augmentation with Implants
For surgery involving breast implants, your surgeon will make a single incision along the natural curve of your breasts. Next, the chosen implants are securely inserted into a carefully made pocket, and the incisions are closed. With the fat transfer technique, fat is removed from an area of the body such as the abdomen, hips, or thighs. The fat is then purified and injected into the breasts to produce the desired results.
Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation
If you receive a fat transfer breast augmentation, we will perform liposuction to remove unwanted fat from one area of your body and inject it into the breasts to increase their volume. Many patients choose to remove fat from the love handles, thighs, and abdomen. We will then purify the fat in a centrifuge to retrieve the purest fat cells.
Recovery
In general, you can expect to experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort for 1-2 weeks after the procedure. You will need to take time away from work and other activities to rest and heal following your surgery. We also recommend that patients avoid any exercise or heavy lifting for at least six weeks after their procedure. To support your body for a smooth recovery, wearing a compression garment is recommended.
Results
Your breasts will be visibly larger right after your surgery, but keep in mind that initial swelling will make them look different from how they will ultimately appear long-term. A healthy lifestyle, routine check-ups, and other maintenance strategies can help you enjoy your breast augmentation results far into the future.
Additional Procedures
There are several other breast surgery options you can choose from at The Peer Group in addition to breast augmentation. Each patient can decide which form of breast surgery is best suited to them based on their individual needs. While some patients may want larger breasts, others may want to reduce them. Breast reduction decreases the size of large and heavy breasts for patients who are experiencing discomfort or lowering the quality of life.
Any type of breast surgery can be included in a mommy makeover, which is a combination of surgeries and treatments focused on restoring their pre-pregnancy body shape. Patients who need to undergo a partial or complete mastectomy for breast cancer-related surgery can restore their figure with breast reconstruction. Additionally, for women who want to alter the appearance of their breasts, have their implants removed, or have their implants replaced after a previous breast augmentation, we perform breast implant removal.
